According to the Finnish Biobank Act (688/2012), biobanks are infrastructures supervised by the authorities in which samples and related data are processed and stored for future medical research needs. Biobank research investigates how genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors impact the etiology of diseases. It also studies disease prevention and the development of safe, more effective and personalised therapies and diagnostics, as well as commercial treatments and medicines.
