The 10/66 Dementia Research Group Population-Based Cohort Study
10/66 aims to provide a detailed evidence-base to inform the development and implementation of policies for improving the health and social welfare of older people in low and middle income countries, particularly the 14 million people with dementia, their relatives and carers.
The 10/66 population-based study aims to:
• Create a publicly accessible data archive;
• Use these data for comparative descriptive analyses of dementia prevalence, and its associated impact;
• Model dementia prevalence, examining the effects of age, education, literacy, socioeconomic status, urban vs rural setting, historical levels of infant mortality, economic development and industrialization;
• Estimate the annual incidence rate of dementia and its subtypes, by age group, education and centre, and to investigate risk factors for incident dementia and Alzheimer’s disease;
• Confirm the predictive validity of the survey dementia diagnoses and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) through follow-up of all dementia and MCI cases.

- Follow Up
- The first wave of surveys started in 2003. A first follow-up was carried out between 2007 and 2010 and the third wave of assessment using an extended form of the basic 10/66 survey will start in 2016. All the countries with the exception of urban India had a full follow-up. In India, a follow-up was only carried out for the mortality outcome.
